3rd Annual Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Month Proclamation Signing

August 3, 2015

Come by to show your support of breastfeeding on Guam as Governor Calvo signs a proclamation declaring August as "Breastfeeding Awareness Month" on Guam for the 3rd year in a row. This event coincides with World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). This year's WBW theme is "Breastfeeding and Work; Let's make it work!"

Guam is very fortunate to have a comprehensive breastfeeding protection law, The Nana yan Patgon Act (PL 32-098), which protects and supports a mother's right to breastfeed anywhere and anytime, and to express milk for her child while working or going to school. For more information, click here

This event has been planned and collaborated by The Guam Breastfeeding Committee, made up of dedicated professionals and volunteers. ♥

The event will be held in the main conference room of the Guam Governor's Complex in Adelup, located at the intersection of Route 1 (Marine Corps Dr.) and Route 6.

Babies & children welcome!!!

The Big Latch On 2015 Guam - "Where America's Latch Begins!"

August 1, 2015

Guam held its 2nd annual Big Latch On event on Saurday, August 1st, 2015 at Sagua Mañagu. We had 19 Guam mamas and 20 babies & children latched, contributing to the worldwide, record breaking total of 14,889 latches!

What is the Big Latch On?

It is groups of breastfeeding women coming together at registered locations around the world to all latch on their child at a set time. All the breastfeeding women and children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by the witnesses. The numbers are added up and we see if we can beat previous Big Latch On records!

The Big Latch On supports communities with identifying and growing opportunities to provide ongoing breastfeeding support and promotion.

The key to the Big Latch On's success is allowing communities to hold their Big Latch On events, empowering them to create an event that relates to the people of their community, while still taking part in a worldwide event.

This event was hosted by the Guam Breastfeeding Committee.

Guam Loses Beloved Midwife, Breastfeeding Supporter, & Island Humanitarian, Janna M. Melsness

April 5, 2015

"Janna first came to Guam on June 7, 2013. She had responded to a job posting that MPG placed with midwifejobs.com. After successfully completing the interview and selection processes, Janna accepted our offer to join Marianas Physicians Group. In less than 2 years, Janna certainly made an impact in our island community. She delivered more than 200 babies on Guam, often accepting patients’ requests to have her on 'special' call for them. A strong proponent of women and children’s health, Janna was an active member of the Guam Breastfeeding Committee and the Non-Communicable Disease Consortium. She was instrumental in getting GMH to revisit its practices in support of new mothers who breastfeed their babies. Janna’s presence on Guam extended beyond healthcare. She loved music and had co-hosted a radio show on KPRG with her partner Alan Grossman, 'Topical Tunes Guam.' She loved animals and volunteered with GAIN. She loved Guam, frequently exploring the island’s hiking trails, beaches and historic sites. She loved people and had a kindness about her that we'll all remember."
